About: Red-flowered Mallow is a South African shrub that belongs to the mallow family. It is native to the Western and Eastern Cape regions and is well-known for its ornamental value due to its continuous and prolific flowering. While it's not commonly classed as a weed, it can grow vigorously and spread in some wild and disturbed areas. It is related to other mallows used in traditional medicine and as food.

Identification: This plant is a woody perennial shrub that can grow up to 2 meters tall. It has deep green, lobed leaves with slightly toothed edges and a soft, hairy texture. The flowers are pink to reddish with dark veining, typically five-petalled and about 3–5 cm wide, blooming in abundance throughout the growing season. The stems are often branched and upright, giving the plant a bushy appearance.

Habitat: Red-flowered Mallow is indigenous to South Africa, particularly the Western Cape and Eastern Cape, and prefers sunny, open habitats. It is commonly found in fynbos regions, along rocky hillsides, and in disturbed soils. It thrives in well-drained soil, tolerates drought, and can also adapt to garden conditions, where it is frequently cultivated for its flowers.

Uses: Although primarily grown as an ornamental, the leaves and flowers of red-flowered mallow, like other mallows, have mild mucilaginous properties. This means they may be soothing for irritated throats or digestive systems when prepared as an infusion. In traditional uses of related species, the leaves are used topically to soothe insect bites, skin rashes, or minor wounds. While not widely eaten, the flowers are edible and can be used as a garnish or in salads.

Harvesting Tips: Harvest flowers and young leaves in the morning once the dew has dried. Use clean scissors or fingers to pinch off leaves and flowers. For herbal uses, dry the material in a well-ventilated, shaded area. Be sure to avoid plants treated with pesticides, especially in cultivated gardens. When foraging in the wild, confirm identification carefully and only take what is needed.

Fun Fact: Unlike many garden plants, Red-flowered Mallow blooms almost year-round, making it a favourite in pollinator gardens. It attracts bees, butterflies, and sunbirds, supporting local ecosystems and adding vibrant colour even in dry seasons.
